At a business breakfast that I attended, I was
fortunate enough to have heard Tony Smith, founder of the Bre@kFree
Holidays chain. Tony talked of how when he started out he had $70,000
capital behind his business when he launched in 1989 selling holiday
packages to the Gold Coast from Sydney for “Schoolies” and football
teams. In 2002 his company was publicly listed and last year he with the
Funds Manger group MFS for some $400 million creating the Stella Resorts
Group. Not a bad return on your investment to say the least.
I asked Tony how he coped with an organisation that
went through such massive growth and what was one of the key lessons in
achieving this. He replied that he learnt very early on to surround
himself with good people. Employ or engage with those who know more than
you.
He also related his business acumen to a story when he
was a professional footballer in AFL and was one day at training
teaching himself to kick with his left foot (he is right handed
normally). ON witnessing this, his coach came over and asked what he was
trying to do and on explaining he was told that first he should maybe
learn to kick with his right foot!
How often have we all been in this sort of situation?
