Tell me — Do you feel like you are unable to clear the "clutter" that is all about you? Got some pressing issues that hang around never seeming to clear away that you just can't resolve or get on top of? Just not operating effectively in your business or even back home? READ ON because you will find this of interest. You have some concerns and don’t want to commit until you can be more sure. These thoughts and feelings are perfectly normal and very reasonable. Until you can address them for yourself there is limited value in moving forward. In this regard I would like to help you if I may. If we look at your situation of whether to engage a coach there are a number of primary doubts and fears you probably want to address for yourself. Some of you are quite possibly have a long list, and for others the list may be quite short. It can generally be found that for most people the fears that they need to address in order to move forward would be in regards to:
As the potential coachee; it is essential that you feel COMFORTABLE with your coach and that you have CONFIDENCE in them to deliver to your needs. Most importantly, you will want to be assured of the INTEGRITY of your coach TRUSTING them with the thought and feelings you share and the work they will do with you. Your coach should conduct themselves professionally. (This was covered in the previous newsletter — I would suggest that if you haven’t read this then please refer to it or the article of the same name found on my web site) This is true of how we enter into most new business relationships. We typically promote the benefits of the relationship. Whilst the other party holds any reservations, the full strength of commitment to come from that relationship can not be realised. In order to effectively build a new business relationship you may want to create with another party, you need to understand what beliefs they have. Sitting in behind those beliefs are their thoughts and feelings - their fears. These must be dealt with in any proposal you wish to put forward for establishing this business relationship. It is not just about what benefits you can convince them of or even outweighing the fears with greater benefits. Many years ago a common practice used in sales was to use fear as a wedge to convince people that by not buying they would somehow lose out. We are not selling fear here, we are wanting the other party to deal with those fears instead. Can you recognise how this applies in the same way in our personal relationships? I never cease to be amazed at how often what I take to my business clients applies equally in their personal lives. So how do I work with you to overcome the fears you might have? By ignoring your fears you could simply move forward and make the decision to engage a coach. It has been shown that we spend 95% of our time worrying about what never happens (80%), is in the past (12%) or is trivial (3%). The odds are therefore in your favour that to just act will work for you! What I can do is to offer you an experience that will give you greater understanding thus relieving your reservations. I am offering you a FREE COACHING session with no obligation to continue.
How do you arrange it? Ring or email me with your contact details. I will
discuss with you all arrangements we have to make. Sessions can be run
over the phone or in person (subject to your location). I can not sell you on the value of coaching. That is a personal judgement that only you can make. I can however work with your fears and an obligation FREE COACHING session is one step towards that. I
look forward to hearing from you even if it is only to hear that you enjoy
these articles and find them of value. |

There's an old adage that goes like this: to avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing. If you want to get ahead in the world, you'll have to do all three. So you should expect to be criticized. The key is to discern what is helpful criticism (most isn't) and what you need to shrug off. The ability to be unflappable in the face of criticism requires a healthy self esteem, self confidence and a tough outer shell. I call it having a thick skin and a soft heart. The trick is to never mix up the two. If you're never being criticized, judged or disparaged in any way, you're likely not doing all that much and you probably need to move up a few notches on the "Go-for-it-Scale'. All criticism should be listened to, but not all of it is valid. A friend of mine used to say, "If one person calls you a horse, well that's just an opinion. If two people call you a horse, you may want to stop and think about it. If three people call you a horse, you may want to start shopping for saddles." Action Point If you trust the source--or you're getting the same criticism from several people--consider the validity and take corrective action when it's warranted. If it's not, thank the person for sharing, and forget about it. Recognize that everyone has their opinion and that you don't always have to defend yours. "Let the dogs bark; the caravan moves on." |

Cheese is a metaphor for what you want to have in life - whether it is a good job, a loving relationship, money, or spiritual peace of mind. Cheese is what we think will make us happy, and when circumstances take it away, different people deal with change in different ways. Four characters in this delightful parable represent parts of ourselves whenever we are confronted with change. Discover how you can let change work to your advantage and let it lead you to success Four characters live in a maze and look for cheese to nourish them and make them happy. The maze is where you spend time looking for what you want. It may be the organization you work in, the relationships you have in your life, or the community you live in. Two of the characters named Sniff and Scurry are mice. They represent parts of us that are simple and instinctive. Hem and Haw are the little people, representing those complex parts of us as human beings. Sometimes we are like Sniff, who anticipates change early by sniffing it out, or Scurry, who quickly scurries into action and adapts. Maybe we are more like Hem, who denies change and resists it out of fear, or Haw, who learns to adapt in time when he sees something better. Whatever part of us we choose, we all share the common need to find our way in the maze of life and succeed in changing times. Key Points of Learning from the book are:

This is an excerpt from Dimensions of Leadership by Greg Merten I believe lack of performance, that is a lack of desired results, is fundamentally a leadership issue, and I believe the source of leadership is in learning, learning about ourselves, in relationship with others and the circumstances in which we operate so we can be ever more effective at producing those results. Stated another way, leadership is about how to create the most effective intersection among ourselves, other people, and our shared circumstance. If we learn to do this, we can look forward to our best days as still ahead of us, not behind us In Warren Bennis' book, On Becoming a Leader, he characterised the difference between leadership and management by identifying leadership with vision, context setting, inspiration, communication, core values, whereas he identified management with execution, measurement and control. To be sure, there is a lot of overlap and both are necessary, but in a high change environment, effective leadership is required. "Leadership is about creating a domain in which human beings continually deepen their understanding of reality and become more capable of participating in the unfolding of the world. Ultimately, leadership is about creating new realities." (Peter Senge) Learning about circumstances, others and self is what is the source of leadership, or stated another way, our leadership is sourced by our relationship to learning. It is how we create new realities. |
